First and foremost is my love of color, but I also like how the oil paint feels, how you can move it around. I enjoy using the palette knife with different color combinations as well as the brush.
Wolf Kahn’s use of color in landscapes has fascinated me from the first time I saw his paintings in the mid 90’s. Richard Schmid’s new book on still life is a recent inspiration.
Still life and floral paintings from life are the ‘basic structure’ of my paintings. Although I love painting from real life, all those years of painting from ‘real fruit and flowers’ have allowed me to be able to just paint them. Thus my paintings are more about how the color and texture work together instead of trying to get the exact look of something.
